Photography Stuff: Back Button Focusing

Since I’m still editing the most recent wedding photos, I thought it would be a good time to do a photography stuff post. Sorry no pics today :-)

About a year and a half ago, I read a blog post from a fellow photographer that changed my world. You see up until this point I was wasting valuable time focusing my camera and if my subjects were moving it was really hard to get the focus dead on. I never knew there was a better, faster, and more efficient way to do it.  Before, to focus my Canon camera I would have to find a focus point, press my shutter halfway to get it focused in on that point, then recompose the shot, and then press the button all the way to take the photo. That’s when I stumbled across a post on Melissa Jill’s photography blog about back button focusing. I found I could adjust my settings to separate the shutter function from the focus function on my camera. I  knew instantly that I had to make the switch and though it took a little time to familiarize myself with the new shooting method- it was so worth it!  Recently Melissa Jill reposted about the back button focusing method, click here to learn more.
